Water and the environment

Catalonia, from a topographical point of view, is a country of great contrasts. With an extension of 31,896 km², it includes very diverse geological formations and has a highly marked relief. There is also a great imbalance in the occupation of the territory and a significant limitation of its water resources, which are, in addition, distributed irregularly.

The hydrographical network of Catalonia is made up geomorphologically of two great slopes: the western slope, which mainly covers the tributary waters of the Ebro basin and the eastern slope, made up of rivers that have their source in Catalonia and that flow into the Mediterranean Sea without flowing into any intercommunity riverbed.

Information about the state of the water and the environment

The Catalan Water Agency uses various control tools that enable us to get to know the state of the water and of the environment. This knowledge helps us know what water resources we have, the current condition of the aquatic ecosystems and therefore enables us to be able to plan and act to improve the quantity and the quality of the water and of the environment.

In the various parts of this section you will find all the information about the quality and quantity of the surface waters (rivers, reservoirs), the ground waters and the coastal waters.
