Responsibilities of the Catalan Water Agency

The Catalan Water Agency is a public organisation attached to the Ministry of the Environment and Housing of the Government of Catalonia, with full authority over the water cycle in the inland basins of Catalonia.

In intercommunity basins the Agency shares authority with the Confederació Hidrogràfica de l'Ebre in regard to treatment, supply, intervention in public water resources and channelling.

In regard to the inland basins of Catalonia the Catalan Water Agency has the following authority:

  • To draw up and revise hydrological plans and projects and undertake their monitoring.
  • To grant, administer and control hydro installations.
  • To control the qualitative aspects of water and public water resources in general.
  • To grant authorisations and concessions.

In regard to intercommunity basins, the Catalan Water Agency has the following authority:

  • Administration and control of hydro installations.
  • Policing of public water resources.

Undertaking of proceedings in regard to this resource, except entering into water agreements.
