The European Union is an association of democratic European countries committed to working together in order to assure peace and prosperity. Its Member States have created common institutions to which they delegate part of their sovereignty, in order that decisions may be taken democratically and on a European scale concerning specific matters of common interest.
For this reason, in addition to implementing policies in different areas and sectors, the EU carries out active regional policy, aimed at fostering progress and social and economic cohesion.
The regional policy of the European Union offers, inter alia, instruments for funding actions that contribute to improving the quality and conservation of the environment.
Through some of its financial instruments, such as the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Union finances different types of projects concerning water. These include the construction of water treatment plants and infrastructures, for the desalination of sea water and for the supply of drinking water, the channeling of torrents and streams in developed areas, and environmental projects to restore margins and recover riverside vegetation.
Within the framework of this policy, the Catalan Water Agency will receive aid from the European Union for some of its projects.
